Ballroom Restoration Background
In January of 2008, the board of directors developed a 5 year plan that
included the completion restoration of the ballroom.
In April 2008, with a $4,000 matching grant that we received from the
CT Trust For Historic Preservation, we hired Duke Moore to create a set of Architectural Plans that encompassed the scope
of our project.
In January 2010, with our second grant from the Ct Trust for Historic
Preservation, we hired Robert Murry to develop Structural Engineer plans for our project.
The scope of work includes: basement foundation, kitchenette, 1st floor
bathroom, exterior stairwell from basement to ballroom, ballroom and all the associated electric & plumbing required.
Mason Lord of Hudson Valley Preservation (HVP) has graciously volunteered
their services through the process of gathering quotes from various contractors.

Tuesday, June 7, 2011 Jim Hart, Steve Dull, Mason Lord, Don Lawson & Jeff Edelstein met at the Hotel
to review the initial estimates that were developed. The restoration plan was divided into 5 phases:
Phase 1- Structural Basement to Ballroom; includes column & load bearing construction. Phase 2- New septic, well, excavation and foundation work, framing for exterior
stairs and exterior trim. Phase 3- Mechanics; plumbing, heating,
AC, bathroom, ballroom restoration, stair tower and painting. Phase
4- Kitchenette Next step will be to generate a worksheet laying
out the phases & milestones and breaking down the total estimates using the same phases. This is the precursor to
applying for grants.

At our annual Christmas in Gaylordsville celebration at the Hotel, we
recruited Meg Currie and Cheryl VanAchte to assist us with grant writing. Until we are ready to tackle the ballroom
restoration, Meg & Cheryl will work on securing grants for furniture and historic photo restorations.

Friday Oct 7, 2011 Margaret Trika Smith-Burke of Gaylordsville has given the Merwinsville Hotel Restoration
$4,000 to match through membership and friends. This $4,000 then becomes $8,000. We would then like to apply for
an $8,000 matching grant, turning the original $4,000 donation into $16,000 that marks the beginning of an effort that began
in 1971 by Gaylordsville residents to restore the Merwinsville Hotel to its former splendor. Donations are now being
accepted using Paypal from our Donate Now tab on our website.
